Now that we know who will be playing Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, everybody wants to know what Peter Parker’s new costume is going to look like.

Spider-Man’s suit has gone through plenty of different iterations, both on screen and in the comics. We thought this might be a good time to look at Spidey’s visual history and decide what designs Marvel could take cues from when designing Tom Holland’s new suit.

Ultimate Spider-Man

Marvel’s new Spider-Man is already taking narrative cues from Ultimate Spider-Man by puttingย Peter Parker back inย high school. Why not borrow some visual cues as well?

The original Ultimate Spider-Man costume, which debuted in 2000, was heavily inspired by John Romita Sr.’s ever popular red and blueย costume design from the 1960s.

If Marvel is looking to stayย faithful to Spider-Man’s most iconic costume, this modernized take is where they should start.

Todd McFarlane’s Spider-Man

Maybe Marvel wants to go just a shade darker than the red-and blue look?

If that’s the case, they should take a trip to the 1990s. When Todd McFarlane took over the Wall-Crawler, he restored Spider-Man to a look much more consistent with Steve Ditko’s original design, reinstating the arm webbing and black-and-red color scheme. In fact, the black and red paletteย may play better in the more muted, somewhat militarized Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Scarlet Spider

Peter Parker is rumored to have two costumes in Captain America: Civil War, with the first one being a homemade version.

While the Scarlet Spider costume, made popular during the nineties, shouldn’t inspire Spidey’s core look for the MCU, a blue hoodie on Peter would be a hell of an Easter egg for longtime fans who rememberย The Clone Saga.

Then again, maybe that’s something they’d rather not be reminded ofโ€ฆ

Sensational Spider-Man

There was a period in Spider-Man’s history when the Peter Parker that fans had followed for years was revealed to actually be a clone, and that Ben Reilly โ€“ the Scarlet Spider who was previously believed to be the clone โ€“ was the real Peter Parker.

For a time, Ben took over as Spider-Man. To commemorate the occasion, he was given a Spider-Man costume all his own.

Ben’s costume would be a nice inspiration for the film, because it is unmistakeably Spider-Man, but different enough โ€“ thanks to a redesigned torso and stylized spider on the chest โ€“ to feel distinct fromย Amazing Spider-Man 2’s costume, which stuck closely to Spidey’s classic look.

Iron Spider

Peter’s rumored second Spider-Man suit is said to be designed by Tony Stark. And as comics readers know, you can’t think of a Tony Stark designed Spider-suit without thinking of the Iron Spider design.

Coincidentally enough, this costume debuted during the Civil War comics event.

This is another costume that probably wouldn’t’ work in the long-term, but might work well as an Easter egg in the form of an early prototype design, or something Peter only wears briefly.

Superior Spider-Man

While the Superior Spider-Man storyarcย is controversial among fans, the costume featuredย throughout the run actually lends itself quite wellย for film usage.

The Superior costumes combines several elements from this list’s previous entrants, such as the red and black color scheme, and stylized Spider-logo, and high-tech elements. It really is a Best-Of-All Worlds option, honoring Spider-Man’s diverse wardrobe.
