If you never got the chance to see Terminator 2: Judgement Day on the big screen, you have a new opportunity this summer, with an enhanced re-release of the film. James Cameron and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 1991 hit will be released in 3D on August 25 for a limited theatrical run, the first time it’s been presented in the format. Yes, that means a 3D blu-ray release will probably follow, but no home release was included in the announcement at Deadline.

The timing – a 26th anniversary? – is a little perplexing, but it’s not the first time a Jim Cameron movie has seen a theatrical re-release, in 3D no less. Titanic came back to theaters with a 3D conversion in April 2012, banking an additional $57.88 million to add to its domestic release total, fifteen years after its initial release. Terminator 2 already has the highest domestic gross of the franchise at $204.8 million, and highest worldwide gross as well with $519.8 million.

Cameron, of course, is not just a fan of 3D in film, but a pioneer with Avatar, and he’s recently finally taken significant steps forward on the first sequel to that film after many years of delays, with plans for several movies after the second hits theaters. He’s also expanding back into the amusement park market, with “World of Pandora” opening in Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom later this spring.

Check with your local movie theater to see if they’ll be carrying Terminator 2: Judgement Day 3D in August, and let them know you’ll be back. Hasta la vista, baby.
