Terminator Genisys is the first part of a standalone Terminator trilogy. In it, John Connor, leader of the resistance in the year 2029, continues the war against the machines. When he learns of a plot to send a Terminator back in time to kill his mother, he sends Kyle Reese to protect her, but the Sarah Connor that Kyle finds is different than what he expected.

The first trailer for the project was pretty illuminating. We went from knowing barely anything, including whether it was a sequel or a reboot, to having a pretty good sense for the premise: the same Kyle Reese from The Terminator goes back in time, but when he arrives, the timeline has been altered. A T-800 was sent back to save Sarah Connor as a child, and that T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is still with Connor, who is after decades of running for her life a badass action hero.

Of course, instead of running from a T-800 when Reese arrives, she’s now being pursued by a much more sophisticated and futuristic Terminator against which the T-800 has limited ability to help. That Terminator, only seen in a few shots during the first teaser, is probably the character most likely to get the spotlight during the Super Bowl tonight.

You can see much more analysis and speculation about the film here, where we broke down the first trailer shot by shot and took a deeper look at the world they’re crafting with the film.

Terminator Genisys stars franchise icon Arnold Schwarzenegger, as well as newcomers Emilia Clarke, Jai Courtney, Jason Clarke, Matt Smith, Byung-Hun Lee, and JK Simmons. The film is directed by Alan Taylor (Game of ThronesThor: The Dark World).

Terminator Genisys opens July 1, 2015.
