FX’s The Strain has added a nice touch of vampire apocalypse to the super-popular zombie apocalypse trend led by The Walking Dead and its spinoff Fear the Walking Dead, giving horror and/or geek fans a fun one-two block to watch on Sunday nights in the late summer/early fall season.

As The Strain continues through the halfway point of season 3, we get word from EW that FX is renwing the show for season 4, with a catch: it will also be the final season.
In all honesty, this should come as a blessing to the show’s fanbase, more so than a surprise. The Strain has seen a pretty steep decline in ratings, with a 40% drop-off between season 1 and 2, and season 3 averaging a viewership that has dropped below 1 million viewers per episode. It’s likely the strength of the show as a brand, and the fact that it’s a product of Guillermo del Toro, that has motivated FX to air this one last season to come.
Season 3 had a reduced number of episodes (down from 13 to 10), and EW is already speculating about whether or not season 4 will be shortened, as well.
For now, those fans who like the show can catch the latter of The Strain season 3 Sunday nights @10/9c on FX.
