New trailers (or at least TV spots) for two Paramount films are going to air during the Superbowl on Sunday February 5 on FOX. Their upcoming box office blockbusters, Ghost in the Shell and Transformers: The Last Knight will both get the multimillion dollar spotlight during the NFL’s big game, the most-watched televised sporting event of the year.

Ghost in the Shell will air during the pre-game portion of the broadcast, when the price per spot is lower, but Paramount will shell out the new record high $5 million to run Transformers during the main show. Ghost in the Shell hits theaters March 31, 2017, while Transformers: The Last Knight comes out this summer on June 23, 2017.

Paramount is the first studio to confirm which movies it plans to support during the big game, but others are definitely on the way. Disney has two spots purchased, most likely for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and the fifth Pirates of the Carribean movie – though those aren’t officially announced yet (Disney has just released the “final trailer” for Beauty and the Beast so that probably takes it out of the running for such an expensive ad). Universal has at least one ad, most likely for The Fate of the Furious, the eighth film in the Fast and Furious franchise. 20th Century Fox has at least one, most likely for Logan, and Sony Picutres as one as well.

In other words, there should be plenty of fun, genre films showcased during the Super Bowl this year, much as it has been for the last several years. However, one studio is reportedly sitting it out: Warner Bros. The studio has many major movies on the way this year, starting with The LEGO Batman Movie, plus Kong: Skull Island, Wonder Woman, Blade Runner 2049, and Justice League, but it sounds like those won’t be slugging it out for TV viewers’ time while the Patriots and Falcons slug it out in Houston, TX for the Super Bowl.
