Anna Paquin as Rogue

Late last year, director Bryan Singer stated that Anna Paquin’s one major scene as Rogue in X-Men: Days of Future Past had been cut from the film. In the final trailer for the film, Paquin’s name was included in the credits, which raised some eyebrows. A representative from Twentieth Century Fox confirmed that Paquin’s Rogue was still in X-Men: Days of Future Past, but that her appearance had been reduced to a mere cameo.Turns out that, while her screen time is much smaller than originally intended, Rogue still plays a vital role in the film. Mild spoilers for X-Men: Days of Future Past follow. We already know that the film hinges on the X-Men of the dystopian future sending Wolverine back in time to change history. In order to do this, Kitty Pryde uses and advanced form of her phasing powers to transfer Wolverine’s consciousness into his younger body from 1973 (we’re not really sure how that works exactly, but okay). According to Vulture, during the events of the film, Kitty becomes injured and begins losing her connection to Wolverine’s consciousness. In order to keep their grip on Wolverine, Magneto and Professor X decide they need to break Rogue out of the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters, which has been converted by Bolivar Trask into a mutant prison that is heavily guarded by sentinels, so that she can absorb Kitty’s powers and anchor Wolverine.Originally, this meant that we’d get a big action scene with Professor X, Magneto and Iceman breaking into the Mansion and then breaking out again with Rogue. This action sequence is what was cut from the film to keep the length down. Rogue will still be used in the same way, but her escape from the Mansion will happen off screen.Vulture also hints that there are even more small cameos in the film. They wouldn’t name names, because doing so would spoil a major plot point, but three other cast members from the original X-Men trilogy are said to make very small appearances on screen in X-Men: Days of Future Past. We have already heard that Kelsey Grammer filmed a cameo as Beast, which is very likely one of the three they are referring to, but the others could likely be anyone from the first three X-Men films that hasn’t already been announced as playing a major role.X-Men: Days of Future Past comes to theaters May 23.
