Upon learning of his death, tributes to the legendary actor best known for portraying The Bright Knight in the 1960s Batman series have been pouring. His Batman co-stars Burt Ward (Robin) and Julie Newmar (Catwoman) expressed their sorrow. Fellow Batman (live-action and voice) actors Ben Affleck, Val Kilmer, Kevin Conroy, and Jason O’Mara made sure to praise West.
And as it is whenever someone dies, we learn something new about them. In this case, did you know Adam West was a bit of prankster? Sure, we knew West didn’t take himself too seriously and relished any opportunity to show off his self-deprecating humor and quirkier side. That’s partly why he readily accepted Seth MacFarlane’s offer to play the delusional Mayor Adam West on Family Guy.
Another great example of West’s sense of humor can be found in a Sun Valley phone book. Although West and his wife, Marcelle, lived in Los Angeles and Palm Springs, California, they spent most of their time at their Ketchum, Idaho ranch. However, if you were in the neighborhood and wanted to look him up, West setup a masterful prank in the local phone book that left people chasing their own tail.
As you can see in the images below (via boingboing.net), when you look up Adam West in directory, where there should be a phone number there is a message: “See Wayne, Bruce (Millionaire).” And when you go to that listing, another message instructs you to: “Please consult Crime Fighters in the Yellow Pages.” And that leads to: “See Batman,” which leads back to the original Adam West listing.
