The swachbuckling standalone film from DC Comics and Warner Brothers was lured to the Gold Coast in Australia after the Australian Federal Treasurer Scott Morrison agreed to pay the super hero franchise $22 million in an effort to beat out other countries hoping to bring Aquaman their way. The film will operate on a $160 million budget and provide over 1,200 jobs for locals.

Aquaman brings Game of Thrones‘ alum Jason Momoa down under for a film directed for Conjuring mastermind James Wan. Joining Momoa will be Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Orm, and Willem Defoe as Vulko.

Aquaman’s trip to Australia comes on the heels of another super hero film packing up after production in the same area. Marvel Studios’ Thor: Ragnarok recently wrapped after filming at the Gold Coast. According to sources involved with production, Ragnarok spent $500,000 on sets built by Oxenford’s Bunnings, offering plenty of jobs in that effort alone.

“Making movies is core business for the Gold Coast, supporting jobs and businesses throughout the region. Our decision to back in Thor was a marvel and so will be our decision to back Aquaman,” Mr Morrison said yesterday.

The new Australian Screen Production Industry Capability Report will release later today, detailing the about 50 films produced in Australia over the past five years.

Aquaman is one of many DC Films projects on the way. Also coming from Warner Brothers are Wonder Woman, Justice League, The Flash, The Batman, Cyborg, Green Lantern Corps, a Suicide Squad sequel, Gotham City Sirens, a Deadshot spinoff, and another Justice League (eventually).
