Batman’s secret lair, the Batcave, has been a fixture in the character’s mythology since its first mention in 1942’s Batman #12. With a 75-year history and multiple takes on the character, the hideout has undergone a lot of changes over the years, but some things remain.

A fan-created image comparing the Batcaves from Adam West‘s 1960s television series on through to Ben Affleck‘s turn as the Caped Crusader in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice recently popped up on Reddit. Take a look below:
The image, credited to TheBatBrand on Instagram, shows both similarities and dramatic differences between four incarnations of Batman‘s hideout. In keeping with Adam West’s “The Bright Knight,” his classic Batcave is in an actual cave (as evidenced by the rocky walls in the background) but is better-lit than the Michael Keaton and Christian Bale versions. Interestingly, Ben Affleck’s cave shares quite a few elements with West’s version, specifically the brighter lighting, rock walls and touches of bright red.
The darkest and most dramatic of the represented caves, though, is the Michael Keaton-era batcave. Dark, moody and with multiple areas staged on platforms within the cave, it’s a stark contrast to the three others, especially the Christian Bale The Dark Knight-era representation.
While the image isn’t all-inclusive of Batcaves throughout DC Comics history – notably absent is the cave from The Lego Batman Movie – it’s an interesting look at the ways in which Batman’s lair has changed and remained the same over the years.
