The Batman: Gotham by Gaslight movie was first hinted at in the special features listed was being included with the home media release of Batman and Harley Quinn. DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. did not announce any of the voice cast for the film or the director, but we know the film will not be directed by Batman: The Dark Knight Returns director Jay Oliva.

Batman: Gotham by Gaslight was originally released by DC Comics in 1989. The story was written by Brian Augustyn, drawn by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, and inked by P. Craig Russell. Batman: Gotham by Gaslight reimagines Batman as a Victorian era vigilante-detective investigating the serial killer Jack the Ripper.

Here’s an official synopsis of the comic book’s story:

In an age of mystery and superstition, how would the people of Gotham react to a weird creature of the night, a bat-garbed vigilante feared by the guilty and the innocent alike? The very first Elseworlds tale re-imagines the Dark Knight detective in Victorian times and pits him against the infamous murderer Jack the Ripper.

Batman: Gotham By Gaslight was popular enough to spawn a sequel, Master of the Future, written by Augustyn and drawn by Eduardo Barreto. It’s greater legacy was the Elseworlds concept. Though Gotham by Gaslight was not originally called an Elseworlds story, it led to a long line of similar reimaginings of DC Comics characters and their universe that would eventually be added to the DC Comics multiverse. These stories were labeled as Elseworlds tales, a label retroactively added to Gotham by Gaslight in later printings.

From an original story by animation icon Bruce Timm, comes an all-new DC Universe animated movie. Poison Ivy and Jason Woodrue (a.k.a. The Floronic Man) embark on an ecological quest to save the planet โ€“ and, unfortunately, eliminate most of humankind along the way. To save humanity, Batman and Nightwing are forced to enlist Harley Quinn to catch Poison Ivy, Harley’s BFF and frequent partner-in-crime. But Batman’s patience is put to the test by the unpredictable and untrustworthy Harley during the twists and turns the reluctant companions face during their bumpy road trip. The result is a thrill ride of action, adventure and comedy no Batman fan has seen before.

Batman and Harley Quinn features a stellar voice cast led by Kevin Conroy (Batman: The Animated Series) reprising his role as the Dark Knight, alongside Melissa Rauch (The Big Bang Theory) making her debut as the irrepressible Harley Quinn. Loren Lester, the voice of Robin in Batman: The Animated Series, returns as Nightwing.
