That conflict is at the center of the fifth episode of Legends of Tomorrow season three, “Return of the Mack“. As you can see in the brand new photos, the team finds themselves in Victorian London, and while they’re there they happen to run into an old friend, their former leader Rip Hunter.

“We are working towards an episode in which we see Rip returned as an unlikely ally, because in 301, to have him as this hard-assed guy who’s denouncing our Legends and trying to retire them from service… he’s great at doing that, but at a certain point, you’re like ‘oh, man. Let’s have the fun Rip’!” executive producer Phil Klemmer said.

Unfortunately having Rip back (at least for the time being), isn’t going to be as smooth a process as current leader Sara would hope.

“And he can’t resist it. Because, yes, he knows that the Time Bureau would probably be better off dealing with all of these anachronisms, but I think by the time we get to 305 [an episode titled ‘Return of the Mack’], he’s kinda champing at the bit for a little fun. He’s feeling nostalgic for some of the old chaos,” Klemmer says.

After Rip created the Time Bureau, the Legends have been pushed to the side, as Rip’s team is less about winging it and more about precision. To be fair, the Legends did break time, and that’s a big reason Rip went a different direction according to executive producer Marc Guggenheim.

“So what the Time Bureau represents is the proper way to do things,” Guggenheim told EW. “We say this a lot in the premiere, the Time Bureau is the scalpel, whereas the Legends are the chainsaw. They fix time, but they’re not pretty about it and they break a lot of eggs on the way to their omelets, whereas the Time Bureau is much more proper and they turn sharp corners and they do it without all the consequential damage to property and time, but probably also with a lot less fun.”

Fans can see Rip reunite with the team when “Return of the Mack” airs on November 7 on The CW.
