Nightwing: The New Order Writer Responds To Fan Criticisms

The comics community has been a bit divided about DC’s recent announcement of Nightwing: The New Order and writer Kyle Higgins wants to set the record straight.

New World Order is an Elseworlds story that sees Nightwing as the leader in an authoritarian future where superpowers have been outlawed. Some immediately compared this Marel’s Secret Empire event, while others envisioned a more Injustice style storyline. Higgins took to Twitter to clear things up, saying “And for everyone tweeting me, Nightwing is NOT running around killing people. He has NOT committed genocide. That’s NOT what this book is.”

Much of that comparison comes from the fact that Marvel’s big storyline for the last few months has built up to Secret Empire, a tale of Captain America betraying the heroes of the Marvel Universe and leading Hydra. New World Order though is much different from that, despite the fact hat it also deals with a hero running a more militant state. In this realm, though Nightwing is not being portrayed as a villain per say, something Higgins emphasized. “His love, optimism, and belief in his fellow man is second to none. Which is why it’s so unsettling that 20 years from now, he’s become the face of the ban on metahuman powers. How does someone like him get to that point? What did he lose? How bad had the world become? And how much better is it now? Really, this is a story about how good people can come to believe in terrible things. It’s a look at a possible future of the DC Universe.”

“Framed by Dick’s relationship with his son, who looks at who his dad used to be–and who he is now–and wants to understand what happened? We ALL try to learn about who our parents were before us. That includes their strengths, weaknesses, flaws…We’re exploring a lot of ideas in this series, and @TrevorMc112 and I are both very proud of it. Hope you’ll give it a shot!”

Elseworlds series have often explored these types of storylines, whether it’s a world without a Superman in “The Nail“, the communist society seen in “Red Son“, or the political corruptness of Batman: Holy Terror. The New Order will be right at home within the Elseworlds catalog, giving fans a new perspective on an old friend.
