Over the years a few characters have assumed the mantle of Batgirl, and even when the same character holds the role Batgirl has undergone various transformations over the course of her career. From the Golden Age of Betty Kane to Barbara Gordon’s most recent move to Burnside and everyone in between, the title of Batgirl has often been in good hands, but everyone hast their favorites. Hit the next slide to see where your favorite Batgirl ranks!

The character is only going to get more popular in the coming years, as DC and Warner Bros. are in close talks with Joss Whedon to helm a Batgirl solo film. Before that can happen the studio is fully intent on delivering a successful Justice League, and you can find the official synopsis below.

In Justice League, fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroesโ€”Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flashโ€”it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

Justice League is directed by Zack Snyder, from a screenplay by Chris Terrio, and features an ensemble cast that includes Ben Affleck (Batman), Henry Cavill (Superman), Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Ezra Miller (The Flash), Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Ray Fisher (Cyborg), Ciarรกn Hinds (Steppenwolf), Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Diane Lane (Martha Kent), Jeremy Irons (Alfred Pennyworth), J.K. Simmons (Commissioner Gordon), Amber Heard (Mera), Kiersey Clemons (Iris West) and Jesse Eisenberg (Lex Luthor).

DC and Warner Bros. have a full slate ahead, with Teen Titans: The Judas Contract coming first on April 4, 2017. After that it’s time for Wonder Woman on June 2, 2017, followed by Justice League on November 17, 2017. The Batman is expected sometime in 2018, with The Flash debuting on March 23, 2018. Aquaman is set for October 5, 2018, and Nightwing’s solo feature is due sometime in 2019.

Betty/Bette Kane

The original Bat-Girl was actually the sidekick to the original Batwoman, not Batman. This was during the golden age of comics. She was eventually ditched and especially deleted from existence until she was reincarnated as…wait for it…Bette Kane. Her moniker of Flamebird was much better though, but she never could surpass others who represented the title.

Cassandra Cain

When you’re the child of two assassin’s much is expected from you, and despite her turbulent childhood, Cain has become one of the deadliest vigilantes in Gotham City. While she didn’t do much talking during her time under the Batgirl cowl, she accomplished quite a bit and is perhaps the deadliest to ever hold the Batgirl mantle.

Stephanie Brown

After Cassandra Cain gave up the Batgirl name and costume, a familiar Gotham vigilante picked up the title, infusing it with some much-needed lightheartedness. Brown used to fight crime under the guise of Spoiler, but it was wonderful to see the character morph into a more mature and well-rounded hero during her time as Batgirl.

If that wasn’t enough, the book got even better when Babara Gordon took her under her wing, guiding her to the hero she knew Brown could become. While Brown’s time in the costume was brief, she left quite the impression with fans and did right by the Batgirl name.

Barbara Gordon

No one knows about overcoming adversity more than Barbara Gordon, a trait that has managed to become her defining characteristic no matter what identity she assumes. Barbara has faced the worst humanity has to offer and come out on top, discovering new aspects of herself in the process.

After she had to give up the Batgirl identity, she reinvented herself as Oracle, effectively becoming the information broker for the entire DCU and leading the Birds of Prey. She would then take on the persona of Batgirl once more, and in each and every iteration she remains the definitive version of the beloved DC character.
