While the critical reception for David Ayer’s Suicide Squad was a bit on the negative side, it doesn’t seem to have slowed excitement for the project from general audiences.

That’s good news for Ayer, who has encountered a few small press issues in the leadup to the film’s release, including a small incident at the world premiere of Suicide Squad. A fan yelled “F*** Marvel!” and Ayer echoed his sentiments, sending some Marvel fans into a tizzy.

Since then he’s apologized for it, chalking it up to “getting caught up in the moment”, and expressed respect for Marvel’s creators and filmmakers. He’s received some support from Marvel as well in the form of Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada, who told agitated fans to “cut David Ayer a break, it was all in good fun.”

Not long after that, iconic creator Stan Lee weighed in with a great video response to the whole thing, asking why dropping an F-bomb is so bad. He also added the caption “Hey @DavidAyerMovies – Don’t feel too bad about dropping the f bomb. It’s a compliment of the highest order!”

Ayer seemed to appreciate the response and posted the following tweet to Stan.

“You’re The Man sir. You made my childhood a nicer place!”

Suicide Squad hits theatres on August 5th.
