The Flash got a new costume for the fourth season of The CW's superhero show, but a recent post from illustrator and designer Andy Poon revealed that the Scarlet Speedster almost had a different look in season three, too.

In a recent Instagram post, Poon shared a close up look at a proposed Flash suit with a much more armored style than what fans of the Arrowverse are used to seeing on Central City's hero. You can check out the armored Flash suit concept in the photo below.

The bust of one of the earlier concepts of the new Flash suit I did during season 3 that has more of a armored feel. We eventually went back to a more iconic and true to comic book look but I really like the lenses so I’m glad that they gave him a one off lenses upgrade in the second episode of season 4. It’s great that costume designer Maya Mani allows me to explore some of these crazier ideas and then helps wrangle me back to a zone where I don’t go full fan boy on the design. Full concept coming soon. @cwtheflash @dccomics @grantgust @jimleeart #theflash #scarletspeedster #barryallen #season4 #suitupgrrade #futureflash #emobarry #concept #illustration #costume #design #vancouver #comicfan #nerdgasm @thisjustinonline @tanya_skywalker

While the armor detail isn't overly dramatic and the suit doesn't look too far off from what the speedster is wearing on the show's current season, the close up look at the concept art shows that this version of the super suit is a little more fortified in the shoulders and appears to have a Kevlar vest-like chest plate, both of which would provide Flash (Grant Gustin) with a bit more durability for the threats he can't outrun. Ultimately costume designer Maya Mani didn't move forward with an armored version of the suit, this close look reveals that some design elements made it into the suit that Cisco (Carlos Valdes) gives Barry in the fourth season's second episode. The lightning bolts on the ear area of the cowl made it into the new suit as did the option for the yellow-toned lenses. That addition to the upgraded suit appeared briefly in that same episode.

"We eventually went back to a more iconic and true to comic book look, but I really like the lenses so I'm glad that they gave him a one off lenses upgrade in the second episode of season 4," Poon wrote.

This peek at the armor variant of The Flash suit is just one of several recent looks at concept art Poon has done for the Arrowverse. He also shared a look at the final concept for Barry's season four suit as well as images of both Mr. Terrific's (Echo Kellum) and Wild Dog's (Rick Gonzales) new looks that debuted in Arrow's season six premiere.

The Flash airs on Tuesdays at 8/7c on The CW.
