It’s not all doom and gloom for Joe West in the upcoming season of The Flash.

When Barry sacrificed himself to the Speed Force after stopping Savitar at the end of The Flash‘s third season it was a huge heartbreak for his surrogate father, Joe West. In fact, Season Three saw Joe suffering a lot of heartbreak regarding his children with Wally being trapped in a Speed Force prison by Savitar and watching Iris “die” at the evil speedster’s hands.

But it wasn’t all dark for Joe, and now actor Jesse L. Martin teases that his character’s budding romance might just blossom in the upcoming fourth season of the hit CW show. Martin told CBR at San Diego Comic-Con last month that Joe’s girlfriend Cecile isn’t going anywhere just yet.

“It’s going to progress,” Martin said about Joe’s relationship. “That’s really all I can say. She’s going to be around, so we’ll see what happens.”

Cecile made her first appearance back in Season One, but it wasn’t until Season Three where she became a love interest for Joe, and Cecile eventually was let in on his Flash-centric secret. While the couple had some bumps in their developing relationship, Martin further explained that having Cecile in Joe’s life gives the character someone he can lean on and who can give him a non-Team Flash outlet.

“I love the idea that Joe’s got a girlfriend, so that gets explored,” Martin said. “I really, really love that, because I spent so much time just dealing with the kids and the gang over at STAR Labs. Now I have somebody at home to deal with, in a good way.”

Martin didn’t offer details about what the romantic future for Joe might hold, but we do know that love might just have a big part for other characters on The Flash as well. Executive producer Greg Berlanti hinted at the Television Critics Association press tour earlier this month that this season’s Arrowverse crossover event would involve life events and other people on the show.

“Our way of making the show bigger this year was to go even more personal,” Berlanti said, “so it’s a big life event for a few different people on the show… There are many life events that happen.”

The Flash returns for its fourth season on the CW on October 10, 2017.
