Wonder Woman forecast for impressive opening but lower than initially expected.
Last month, BoxOfficePro predicted Wonder Woman will have a 3-day opening weekend of $83M at the North American box office. Today, however, The Wrap reports that the "majority of independent trackers have set a domestic opening weekend in the $65 million range." They did add that "one outlying service projects a whopping $105 million debut."
Going with the majority, let's say the film falls in the $65M range. That would be the worst opening for a film in the DC Extended Universe. Man of Steel launched the DCEU with a $116.6M debut weekend in June 2013. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice came out of the gatest the strongest with a $166M opening in March 2016. Five months later, Suicide Squad opened with an astounding $133.6M.
When compared against Marvel's solo offerings, $65M for Wonder Woman would be quite an achievement. Captain America: The First Avenger and Thor -- led by Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth, respectively -- opened with the same amount in 2011.
The Hollywood Reporter, which is also reporting a $65M debut, adds: "Those with access to tracking say interest is strongest among males who are 25 and older, followed by females 25 and older. The good news for [Warner Bros.] is that the movie is appealing to younger males and females as well."
