Patty Jenkins Didn’t Expect ‘Wonder Woman’ To Be So Well-Received

No matter how you look at it, Wonder Woman is a bonafide success. The DC film debuted back in June, and it has since broken dozens of box-office records. The film, which received universal praise from critics, sits as the example of how Warner Bros. can do a DCEU film right. However, its director wasn’t sure at first if Wonder Woman would go over well.

Recently, Patty Jenkins sat down with director Richard Donner for The Director’s Cut (via CinemaBlend) to talk superhero films. It was there the director told Donner she approached Wonder Woman‘s debut with a braced attitude.

“I went into the release of the movie assuming it would be, in best case, a mixed bag. And I sort of braced myself for it, where I thought, well, ‘Listen, you’re doing a beloved superhero; it’s always going to end up being at least 40%, oh you could have done, blah blah blah.’”

Continuing, Jenkins said, “So, the support and positivity that the movie has received, and also just the people wanting to talk about what we wanted to talk about in the movie and not other things, has been stunning.”

Though unfortunate, it’s not shocking to learn about the director’s initial reaction to Wonder Woman going public. Jenkins is a vetted creator with one strong backbone, but the DCEU has not had the best critical reception. Films like Suicide Squad and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice garnered mixed reviews at best, and no one knew if Wonder Woman would buck the trend.

Clearly, the film did turn the film franchise’s reputation on its head. Wonder Woman is the highest-rated movie within the DCEU, and a sequel is already being carefully planned with Jenkins at its side. Any fears Jenkins had about introducing her take on Diana Prince to the world have surely faded, and fans cannot wait to see more to the Amazon moving forward.
