Sonic the Hedgehog’s vast array of sidekick characters have been a topic of heated debate for years now. A lot of people find characters like Big the Cat and Shadow the Hedgehog annoying and unnecessary, but a certain hardcore contingent of Sonic fans really like the sidekicks. Like, really like them. Be forewarned, there’s some pretty serious Rule 34 stuff lurking out there.

So, what’s Sega to do? Please the more casual Sonic fans by chopping all the sidekicks, or cater to the hardcore base and continue to include them? Well, the upcoming Sonic Forces has found a clever solution โ you can now create your darn Sonic sidekick! If it ends up being lame or annoying, you have nobody to blame but yourself!
Sonic Forces‘ customizable “Hero” character will be a third playable option alongside Modern Sonic and Classic Sonic. Players will be able to choose from seven different base animal types, which they can then make their own with hundreds of pieces of gear. You can also customize your abilities โ all Hero characters will come with a basic grappling hook weapon, but you can further determine your powers with gadgets called Wispons.
You can check out a full trailer for the new Hero character, above, and another look at what your customized critter might look like in action, below.

Here are the animals you can choose from when creating your character:
Bear โ Blows away enemies with a homing attack
Bird โ Flies high with double jump abilities
Cat โ Keeps one ring after being hit
Dog โ Restarts with five rings after the player dies
Hedgehog โ Collects rings when getting damaged
Rabbit โ Has longer invincible time after receiving damage
Wolf โ Automatically draws in rings when near them
It will be interesting to see how Sonic players respond to the new custom characters. There are certainly a lot of creative Sonic fans out there, but the proof will be in the gameplay. If your Hero character isn’t as fun to play as Sonic, most people will probably end up ignoring the feature.
Sonic Forces dashes on PC, Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch this holiday season.
