Ubisoft is about to add in a "loot crate" type system in Rainbow Six Siege and, to be honest, we're okay with that. Say hello to "Alpha Packs." During a recent dev vlog outlining all of the changes coming in year two, a Ubisoft rep whose name I was never able to ascertain describes a new loot system coming to Siege when year 2 changes finally roll out. The system is still a work in progress, but it will work something like this:

Every time you complete a match, win or lose, the chance of you unlocking an Alpha Pack. Actually scoring an Alpha Pack, though, is awarded by a lucky roll of the dice, and those dice will only roll after you win a game. So every time you play, your odds of scoring new loot are increased, and even if you don't get an Alpha Pack after a win, your odds continue to increase until you finally do.

So what are in the Alpha Packs? Everything, it seems. From charms, to weapon skins, to the sick new helmets, it sounds like almost anything that can be purchased with renown can be earned in an Alpha Pack. "I want to give them access to almost the whole item bank we currently have in-game," the dev said. "But beyond that, we'll also thank players for their time spent on the game. You play, and we give you some loot packs that you can open for free. The more you play, the more you get."

Rainbow Six Siege, much like Overwatch has its appeal anchored in gameplay, but the aesthetic unlocks have progressively become more and more of an attraction to new and veteran players alike. These Alpha Packs aren't going to give anyone a competitive edge, they could end up bringing in a slightly larger player-base who had never considered playing before, and they give lapsed players like myself a fun reason to return to the game to see what else is new. I'm not seeing any down sides here.
