Last week, Take-Two went on a bit of a rampage on certain mod tools for Grand Theft Auto V, indicating that they were "illegal," despite OpenIV, the developers of one of the main mod tools for the PC version of the game, saying otherwise. On top of that, Rockstar actually sided with its main publishing party, noting that the mods were actually getting in the way of players experiencing everything that Grand Theft Auto Online was about.

That statement has apparently gotten the team over at OpenIV riled up, because they noted that Rockstar Games is "wrong and they know it." They feel that "getting in the way of the experience" just isn't possible.

The company noted, "'Unfortunately OpenIV enables recent malicious mods that allow harassment of players and interfere with the GTA Online experience for everybody', is just wrong and they know it. OpenIV does not allows or supports any kind of GTA Online mods. We always supported Rockstar in their right to protect GTA Online from hacks and cheats. But, Take-Two's C&D was specific for out Single player mods and have no mentions about GTA Online."

But things are getting even nastier than expected, as a number of fans have taken to Steam, Google and even Change.org to note their frustration with the publisher's actions. (That petition currently has over 20,000 signatures and climbing.)

On top of that, the game's listing on Steam has been hit with "overwhelmingly negative" reviews, with only 14 percent of the 35,000+ plus reviews for the game being positive.

This can't be good news for Take-Two, even though sales of Grand Theft Auto V continue to fly through the roof on the PC front, as well as consoles. But it doesn't sound like OpenIV will do much about it, since it feels that taking the company to court will break them. That leaves it up to the fans, who have stopped at nothing to sound off against Take-Two's recent actions on the modding community. Whether it will do any good has yet to be seen.

Still, this is ugly. Were the mods really doing that much harm? We don't believe so…

Grand Theft Auto V is available now for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. There's also a version available for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
