League of Legends: Why Irelia Is Getting an Update Before Other Champions

Irelia has been chosen to be the next recipient of a Visual and Gameplay Update following Swain’s rework, but some League of Legends players have been left wondering why the champion was chosen over others.

It’s a question that comes up pretty frequently whenever a champion update is announced, but Irelia still seems like a surprise pick to many. With champions like Dr. Mundo and Nunu left waiting for updates with a couple of dedicated mains keeping their legacy alive, “Why Irelia?” is certainly a question that plenty of players had.

One user asked Riot Meddler about the intent behind choosing Irelia now as opposed to later. Meddler responded and pointed to two main factors that contribute to Irelia getting picked over other champs.d

Irelia Before Other Champs

According to Meddler, the two main things that the update teams look at are which champions need the most help and which ones will make players the happiest once they’re done. In Irelia’s case, she seems to be a champ that’ll satisfy both of those requirements.

“A lot of it was that the team had really strong concepts for how to make Irelia better that they were really excited to work on,” Meddler said. “Some of it’s also that while how bad a state a champion is in is a major driving factor in selecting VGUs the number of people we can make happy and excited with one’s also relevent. Irelia ranked really highly in that regard, in terms of untapped potential and player attachment.”

Meddler said that Nunu and Mordekaiser are both extremely high on the list of champions that need updates, so their time will hopefully come soon.
