Sonic the Hedgehog Movie Gets 2019 Release Date

Sonic the Hedgehog will be rolling into theaters in 2019.

Paramount has announced that the movie, based on the popular SEGA franchise, will be released on November 15, 2019. Paramount obtained the rights to the Sonic franchise last year, and quickly announced that Deadpool director Tim Miller would serve as the executive producer.

Sonic will be a mix of live-action and CGI and will be directed by Jeff Fowler, who is making his directorial debut. Neil H. Moritz is also serving as producer, while Dmitri Johnson and Dan Jevons will act as co-producers. Toby Ascher is also serving as an executive producer.

Sonic is arguably one of the best known video game characters in the world, having served as SEGA's tentpole franchise for over 20 years. Sonic first appeared in 1991 and quickly became a rival to Nintendo's Mario. Early Sonic the Hedgehog games made full use of the Sega Genesis's then revolutionary 16-bit technology.

Over the years, Sonic has made plenty of friends and enemies, ranging from his sidekick Tails, his friendly rival Knuckles, the adorable (and dangerous) Amy Rose, and his arch-nemesis Dr. Ivan "Eggman" Robotnik. Later games in the series introduced characters like the dark Shadow the Hedgehog and Rouge the Bat.

Most games in the Sonic franchise focus on Sonic's battles with Eggman and their pursuit of the powerful Chaos Emeralds. If Sonic obtains all of the Chaos Emeralds in a game, he can unlock a ultra-powerful Super Form that's not dissimilar to Goku going Super Saiyan in DragonBall Z.

The Sonic franchise arguably peaked in the early 1990s once Sega bowed out of making consoles. However, SEGA has continued to produce Sonic games consistently, even teaming up with Nintendo to make a Mario and Sonic video game series set around the Olympics. In total, the Sonic franchise has sold over 350 million units.

Sonic does have the edge over Mario in one notable area: cross-media. Sonic has appeared in several cartoon, anime, and television shows over the years and even had a long-running comic series that recently wrapped up last year.
