Super Nintendo World Patents Hint At Mario Platformer And Donkey Kong Minecart Rides

As you may have heard, all your childhood Nintendo dreams are about to come true, as the Big N and Universal Parks & Resorts are teaming up to create a series of new rides and attractions. Super Nintendo World recently held its official groundbreaking in Japan, during which it was announced a Mario Kart ride is on the way.

But what other rides can we expect from Super Nintendo World? Mario Kart sounds amazing, of course, but there has to be more than that! Well, Japanese Universal Studios megafan LCA Studios has unearthed new patents, which hint some very exciting things are in store for Super Nintendo World. Some of the patents provide more detail about the Mario Kart ride, specifically, how drifting will work, but the rest point to all-new attractions.

First up we have the "Simulator Ride." The patents show people strapped into harnesses, which can seemingly be moved side-to-side and up and down. These harnesses have a slightly Metroid-like look, but that's probably just a coincidence. More likely, this is for a Super Mario Bros. attraction that actually lets players leap over pits and obstacles like a certain platforming superstar.

Next up, we have Boom Coaster, which is very obviously a Donkey Kong Country minecart attraction. The patent shows minecarts attached to a rail, which can jump over pits and obstacles, presumably at the player's behest. Man, I don't know – Donkey Kong minecart stages are stressful enough when they're purely virtual. I don't know if I can handle the real thing. Then again, I'm sure Universal won't actually let park visitors plunge into any bottomless chasms.

Super Nintendo World is scheduled to open in Japan sometime before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and will eventually make its way to Universal parks in other parts of the world, including Orlando.
