Battlefield 6 Developers Reveal Why Levolution Has Been Scaled Back (And If it Could Return)

Battlefield 6‘s developers have addressed why the franchise has moved away from the “Levolution” feature from Battlefield 4 and if it could ever return. Battlefield 6 is looking like it will be a massive, epic shooter that gives fans the Battlefield experience they have been wanting. It has been over a decade since the last modern day Battlefield game and although Battlefield 2042 was only in the near-future, the game itself left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth. Thankfully, it seems like Battlefield 6 has learned a lot from the previous game and will be taking big steps to win back fans and lure in new ones too.

One thing that fans really want to see from Battlefield 6 is a return to a feature known as Levolution. The feature was introduced in Battlefield 4 and essentially, players could trigger a big, map-changing event that provided a big cinematic spectacle. A skyscraper could come tumbling down, a map could be flooded, a tsunami could be triggered and cause a battle ship to crash into the middle of the map. All of these moments were awesome, but these moments have been scaled back over time. There have still been cool moments like a rocket that can explode in Battlefield 2042, but they’re definitely not as central to the marketing of the games now.

Why Battlefield 6 Doesn’t Have As Many Levolution Events

I recently got to go hands-on with Battlefield 6‘s biggest map which does have a bit of Levolution in it. At the center of the map, there’s a construction site which is where a lot of the infantry fighting happens. A crane stands tall above the site and players can even zipline up to the top of it, providing a vantage point for snipers. However, the crane can also be toppled over in a scripted set piece which then leaves debris on the ground after it is taken down.

Out of the 6 maps I have played in Battlefield 6, this is really the only map that has anything like this. I asked producer Jeremy Chubb about the decision to scale back Levolution and if there’s any chance it could return in the future.

“It was a big focus for us this time around to dial in on tactical destruction, a dynamic sandbox of destruction. Environments that changed and evolved and demanded a tactical response or presented cool strategic opportunities. It invites players to explore ripping them up in different ways and different modes. I think that’s a primary focus. You mentioned we haven’t done Levolution in a while, but 2042 we did some big stuff, we were blowing up rockets and some pretty over the top spectacular scenes,” said Chubb.

“With this game, we wanted it to be more grounded in feel, I guess more unpredictable and demanding in strategy or tactics. I think that was a very deliberate choice, but we love that stuff as well. We put the crane in, it’s always tempting and I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a return to some of the bigger scale in the future.”

I mentioned how watching the skyscraper collapse in Battlefield 4‘s Siege of Shanghai map is still a sight to behold a decade later, as players still stop what they’re doing and give their undivided attention to the spectacle. Chubb noted that the legacy of those moments means a lot and they know people long to see more of them.

“We’re still talking about it, right? That means a lot. Obviously we try to work as close as we can with the community on this one and come close to understanding what the audience wants. We definitely hear that that people love that stuff.”

Battlefield 6 will release on October 10th for Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC. What do you think? Leave a comment below and join the conversation now in theย ComicBook Forum!
