Another exciting round of Unearthed Arcana (UA) playtesting has just been released for Dungeons and Dragons‘ 5.5 Edition, right before its newest expansion. Before the launch of Arcana Unleashed in September 2026, Wizards of the Coast have provided players with three new subclass options to try, and one fresh Feat path similar to past UA documents. This time, the theme of the UA revolves around the Underdark, the subterranean realm where Drow, Duergar, and other strange creatures dwell in mysteries devoid of sunlight.

The last couple of shared UA included Mystic and Villainous options for players, providing subclasses tied to magic and dark deeds. After a second document updating the first one, the Villainous UA subclasses created a structure the new Underdark playtesting is following, giving players a list of Feats to take as they level up. The Villainous options provided ways for players to grow into a Death Knight or Lich, but the Underdark UA goes in a much different direction.
Latest D&D Playtesting Gives Players Three Subclasses For Mysterious Underdark Adventures

The Underdark playtesting goes deep into the strange, almost uncanny nature of its setting, drawing on ideas of corruption and body horror for players to explore. The Underdark is a perilous place full of malicious and mysterious societies who’ve managed to survive by tapping into the powers the dark offers them. In the deepest corners of the Underdark, even stranger creatures lurk, almost alien in nature. These themes manifest in the UA through three subclasses, including:
- Barbarian – Path of Unlight
- Rogue – House Agent
- Wizard – Imaskarcanist
The Path of Unlight Barbarian is a type of melee warrior infused with the power of Unlight, an uncontrollable magic that can spread and corrupt. Unlight burns away darkness, but is unpredictable and contagious in its efforts to illuminate the Underdark’s shadows. An Unlight Barbarian gains access to bright energy radiating throughout their body, manifesting a Radiant Rage whenever they get angry. This allows players to generate Bright Light, and deal extra radiant damage to enemies. At higher levels, this archetype lets Barbarians perceive secrets in the dark, as well as infect enemies with Unlight to damage and blind them.
Meanwhile, House Agent Rogues are loyal followers of great houses, usually those controlled by Drow Matriarchs in the Underdark city of Menzoberranzan. No matter their sponser, this type of Rogue can cast limited magic meant to deceive or charm enemies into allies for brutal betrayals. Through a magical Insignia, a House Agent might Influence someone as a Bonus Action, or use better Charisma-based skills to lure an enemy into a deadly Backstab. As a Cunning Strike, Backstab lets you stun targets who have been charmed, which is easier to apply at higher levels.
The final subclass in this UA is the Imaskarcanist Wizard, named after the Deep Imaskar society that live in the Underdark. These people have learned the eldritch arts of controlling Unlight, using sentient artifacts called Imaskarcana to channel it. When you take this path, your Wizard character can change elemental damage to Radiant instead, bypassing resistances on some foes. At the same time, this Wizard can sacrifice their own Hit Die to heal and buff allies. Later levels see this Wizard even allow players to curse enemies with Unlight, immediately attune to magic items, and empower their own Radiant spells.
Ceremorphosis Feat Path Also Allows Players To Become Mind Flayers Over Time

Another feature of the Underdark UA is the inclusion of the Ceremorphosis Feat path, a series of character progression options players of Baldur’s Gate 3 might recognize. This path allows your character to slowly transform into a Mind Flayer, one of D&D scariest and oldest monsters who use powerful psionic magic to eat brains and form colonies. Typically in service of an Elder Brain, your Mind Flayer character has a cerebral tadpole chewing their brain matter, but for some reason, have a sort of resistance that prevents the transformation from happening instantly.
From as early as Level 4, you can choose to take the Tadpole Host Feat to start the Ceremorphosis path, gaining increased Intelligence, the Mind Sliver cantrip, and a new resource that defines your Psionic Power. By spending Psionic Energy Dice, you can deal psychic damage to enemies, but further Feats along the path grant different abilities. As you reach certain Levels, you can take additional Ceremorphosis Feats that grant you Telepathy, improved Energy Dice, increases to ability scores, and other benefits. For example, Tadpole’s Safeguard grants you defensive skills, while Ulitharid’s Might gives you extra tentacles for Unarmed Strikes.
This path culminates into a Full Ceremorphosis, where you become a fully fledged Mind Flayer, Aberration creature type and all. You can either invest in becoming a Mind Flayer specializing in spellcraft, or one that excels at dealing psychic damage and grappling targets. Overall, this Underdark UA introduces many interesting and fresh concepts to play with, providing character paths far different from what Dungeons and Dragons has tried before.
