The Nintendo Switch continues to surpass everyone’s expectations while delivering on their pre-launch promise of more third party support than ever before. We knew that Bethesda’s Skyrim was coming to the portable console from the Big N, but when they also announced that the popular DOOM title, as well as Wolfenstein: The New Colossus, were also making their way – fans were hyped. But that doesn’t mean the journey has been easy and the comparisons to stronger platforms out there are endless. Now a few of the developers are speaking out about what’s it’s like to develop for the Nintendo Switch and how they really just wish people would shut up already.

The developing team responsible for the DOOM Nintendo Switch Port, Panic Button, are hard at work making it the smoothest transition as possible. With working up close and personal with the latest Nintendo console, the team feels that the hardware is extremely impressive and something that goes above and beyond what many were expecting. Despite that, because the competingย consoles “got their first”, these accomplishments are mostly overshadowed by overwhelming criticism from the market about things such as resolution and how the overall port is looking. To be frank, they are kind of tired of it.

Studio GM Adam Creighton had this to say in a recent interview:ย

“It’s been hard,” Creighton says. “Wicked hard. But I would expect it to be. This is a title that is so frenetic and action-packed and gameplay-pure that getting it to work correctly on the hardware is really important to us, and we spend a lot of time trying to make sure it measures up from the lens of ‘does itย feelย likeย Doom?’”

But it’s not just about Creighton and his team as a developerย orย a gamer; it’s about being both and putting that passion into their work. When talking about how hard it was to work on this project with all of the half-aware critique, he had mentioned:ย

“As a gamer, I like the hardware,” Creighton says. “A lot. A lot. A lot. As a developer, I’m grateful to be bringing games people don’t expect to the hardware, and when they’re announced, people say ‘Whaโ€“?!’ and then ‘Oh, that makesย totalย sense.’ This might sound defensive, but I’m bummed some gamers focus onย framerateย or resolution, and don’t focus on, ‘Is it fun?’ or ‘Doesย gameplayย feel good?’ I know we’re working hard to bring quality games to the hardware for which we develop. To make them enjoyable on the TV. To make them enjoyable on the go. I’m proud of my team. We’re working hard, we’re not cutting corners, and we’re not leaving anything on the table.”
