A sci-fi game currently free with some PlayStation Plus subscriptions is being praised by subscribers as both “beautiful” and captivating.” And the praise comes as a bit of a surprise because if you look at the Metacritic score of the sci-fi adventure game, it is a 72, which isn’t bad, but it also isn’t that good either. That’s a middle-of-the-road score, but perhaps a score that doesn’t do the PS5 game justice.

As part of the PlayStation Plus September 2025 lineup, PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium subscribers, but not PS Plus Essential subscribers, can download The Invincible for free. How long the sci-fi game is going to be available via the Sony subscription service, we do not know, but it is currently saving subscribers from a $29.99 purchase.
About the Game
The Invincible, for those that do not know, is notably based on the 1964 novel of the same name by Stanislaw Lem. Released by developer Starward Industries and publisher 11 bit Studios in 2023, The Invincible failed to penetrate the mainstream market or overly impress critics, but it has impressed consumers who have checked it out. To this end, it has an 87% approval rating on Steam and a 4.37 out of 5 rating on the PlayStation Store. And right now, one of the top posts on the PlayStation Plus Reddit page is a post dedicated to it, and that praises it. In fact, the post specifically compares it to the 2016 indie hit, Firewatch, likely because are narrative and exploration focused, and because both games rely heavily on mystery.
“For all the Firewatch fans, The Invincible is a Firewatch-style game where you and another astronaut uncover a planetโs mystery through radio comms. Give it a try if you havenโt yet. Genuinely one of the most beautiful looking games I’ve played, and the mystery behind the planet is so captivating.”
Of course, in isolation, this post is not that noteworthy, but the popularity of the post suggests there is something to it, as do many of the comments.
“Currently in the middle of it! Enjoying it so far,” reads one of the comments. Another adds: “Had this on my wishlist forever, and when it finally released, I bought it so fast… I loved this game and encourage others to pick it up and play it.”
If sci-fi games do not tickle your fancy, or if you have played this title already, the good news is that you have plenty of other new options via PlayStation Plus. For example, the Sony subscription service recently added one of the best PlayStation games of all time.
