Ask any given game fan what their favorite Sega Genesis games of all time are, and a majority of them will likely mention Gunstar Heroes. When it released in 1993, this Treasure-produced classic delivered an excellent twist on usual run-and-gun shooters, with stylish visuals, fun gameplay and a heaping amount of challenge.

But in case you missed it during the Sega Genesis era, not to worry โ you can now check it out for your mobile devices, free of charge.
Sega has announced today that the awesome shooter has joined its Sega Forever line-up, meaning that you can download it for free through iOS devices and Google Play for Android devices. The game is free to play, although you can pay a one-time fee of $1.99 to remove the ads that pop up during the game.
Here’s the game’s official description, straight from Sega:
“Gunstar Heroes was developed by Treasure, the Japanese studio known for frantic action games and innovative gameplay systems, and first published by SEGA for the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive. The game has two playable characters, ‘Red’ and ‘Blue’ – two members of the Gunstar family – who are on a mission to stop the Empire, an evil organization that has set out to destroy civilization. At the time of release, Gunstar Heroes met widespread approval from critics and fans alike and has been listed by multiple publications as one of the best video games of all time. Like other games in the SEGA Forever collection, Gunstar Heroes offers added features like leaderboards, cloud saves, controller support, and cross-platform local multiplayer capabilities.”
Based on the trailer, which you can see below, the game looks to be a very faithful port of the original, and being able to play it wherever you please is a nice touch. Consider this a nice little Xmas gift from the publisher, especially if you’ve been looking to take on its challenge again.
Check out Gunstar Heroes now, and help Red and Blue keep the fight on the good side of things!
