Most of the big news this weekend has come courtesy of Disney’s D23 Expo, but EVO 2017, the biggest fighting game championship series in the world, is also currently in full swing in Las Vegas. For the first time Injustice 2 was a part of the event, with the Finals taking place last evening.

Fighting game tournaments are always unpredictable, everybody always has a button-masher’s chance of pulling off an upset, but the Injustice 2 finals featured more twists and turns than usual. The biggest surprise was that Dominique “SonicFox” McClean, a multiple-time EVO champion and the widely-acknowledged top Injustice 2 player in the world, was knocked out in the quarterfinals by Tim “HoneyBee” Commandeur using the underappreciated Flash.

EVO 2017 will definitely have some effect on the Injustice 2 Tier rankings, with players successfully using a wide range of different fighters. In addition to HoneyBee doing surprisingly well with The Flash, other underrated characters like Catwoman, Poison Ivy, and Atrocitus were used to great effect. Of course, favorites like Aquaman, Batman, Black Adam, and Brainiac also got heavy use.

Ultimately, the grand finals came down to HoneyBee vs. Ryan “Dragon” Walker, with Dragon taking the crown. The finals saw HoneyBee mainly sticking with Flash, while Dragon chose the trusty Aquaman. HoneyBee almost managed to pull off the upset, winning a couple rounds, but Dragon’s careful zoning with the powerful Aquaman allowed him to narrowly claim victory to win the first ever Injustice 2 EVO Championship. You can check out the HoneyBee vs. Dragon Injustice 2 grand finals at the top of this post.

Injustice 2 is available now for Xbox One and PS4. Need more Injustice? You can check out WWG’s extensive coverage of the game, right here.
