There’s never going to be a Minecraft sequel. The game exists in a sort of space between a regular game that demands sequels and a live-service game. It is updated regularly with new gameplay and mechanics, but it doesn’t have any battle passes or seasons. Minecraft is just a game that’s been kept alive for an astonishing number of years, thanks to these updates giving the community new things to experience and more places to explore. In theory, this is a perfect way to keep a game going, and the developers have had a few incredible updates over the 14 years since its launch. Here are the five that impacted Minecraft the most.

1. Caves and Cliffs

Caves and Cliffs was so influential that it had to be split into two updates. It was such a game-changer that Mojang could not put everything into one patch, instead splitting it between versions 1.17 and 1.18. Still, it’s hard to argue that there is a more impactful change for Minecraft than this two-part update. The build limit and the cave depth got increased, making every world so much bigger. You could go higher or deeper than ever before by a lot.
Additionally, it added several incredible things that go overlooked because of the cave and cliff expansions. Axolotls, goats, the Warden, brushes, bundles, amethyst, copper, azalea, candles, deepslate, sculk, and so much more all got added in this update. There are so many more excellent building items and decorations now because of the 1.17 and 1.18 updates.
2. The Nether Update

The Nether Update completely revolutionized Minecraft. Although it came at the cost of the original zombified Piglin, this update really improved the game. The Nether has always been a dangerous place best explored only when necessary. After the 1.16 update, it became so much more fascinating. It also got more dangerous, but the reward was as increased as the risk.
Bastions, Striders, Netherite, Lodestone compasses, blackstone, chains, respawn anchors, and more all came in this update. It also added biomes to the Nether to make the exploration much more worthwhile: Soul Sand Valley, Crimson Forest, Warped Forest, and Basalt Deltas. The Nether is so much better and more useful now.
3. The Redstone Update

There are people who make working computers within Minecraft now, and that would not be possible without redstone, which was fittingly introduced in The Redstone Update. Version 1.5 really changed Minecraft, and for the better. Those automatic farms we all love to make would be impossible. Plus, redstone ore is a fantastic source of XP while you’re mining, so it’s useful for even more than just power.
While redstone naturally gets the attention, several other crucial parts of the game arrived in this update. These include quartz, minecart with hopper, daylight sensors, and basically everything that remotely uses redstone. There’s so much automation in the game now, and it all began here.
4. Village and Pillage

Villages are currently still one of the most fun structures to come across. They’re not really dangerous in any way, and they can provide pretty rare, useful loot. You can come away with books, diamonds, and iron tools sometimes. It’s always fun to roll up on a village, and they arrived in the 1.14 Village and Pillage update.
With villages arriving came Wandering Traders, foxes, pandas, and pillagers. Pillagers are dangerous, but they can be some of the most fun and rewarding mobs to take on. Illagers and Ravagers drop great loot and provide a real challenge with raids. All that and more, including lanterns, barrels, bells, blast furnaces, smokers, crossbows, and leather horse armor, arrived in this patch.
5. The Exploration Update

The 1.11 Update, aka The Exploration Update, remains one of the most influential updates Minecraft has ever had. Both Curse of Binding and Enchantment, which are important things in the game today, were added at this time. So were Evokers, llamas, Vexes, and Vindicators. The observer, one of the most important redstone blocks out there, was introduced.
Maps for exploring and looking for Ocean Monuments or Woodland Mansions, which were also a brand-new addition to the game, were added by way of Cartographer villagers. The Totem of Undying, maybe the most vital item to obtain in Minecraft, was added in 1.11. Since this update, the game has been so much more about outward exploration, helping shape plenty of the future updates.
