The September 2025 Nintendo Direct showed off an exciting lineup of new games coming to the Switch and Switch 2. For some reason, the next entry into the Fire Emblem series appears to have been one of the most guarded games going into the Direct, considering so many of the other ones, from Resident Evil Requiem to Pokemon Pokopia, had leaked days ahead of time. But to Nintendo, the biggest title was the one they saved for last: the next Fire Emblem entry.

Fire Emblem: Fortuneโs Weave seems to emphasize arena combat and โheroic gamesโ that have motivated various characters to fight. While the trailer showed off a host of new people, returning character Sothis can be notably seen at the end, suggesting the new game has some connections to its predecessor, Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Unfortunately, we might not find out for a while, as the game doesnโt have a definitive release and the trailer only teases a vague 2026 date.
What We Know About The New Fire Emblem Game, Fortune’s Weave
While the trailer doesnโt give away too much information about the story and mechanics, the plot of Fortune’s Weave appears to revolve around heroic games initiated by a figure known as the โDivine Sovereign,โ who promises in the trailer to grant the winner any wish they desire. The inclusion of Sothis at the end suggests that the story may not be so straightforward, as her godlike powers leave nothing off the table. Sothis asks the player if they remember her, suggesting that Fire Emblem: Fortuneโs Weave will be a sequel of sorts, or at least contain references to the previous game.

In terms of gameplay mechanics, the new Fire Emblem might incorporate open-world elements, as evidenced by one of the main characters, Cai, running around a large city. From the brief moments that in-game combat is shown, we see that weapon durability is present, along with the usual range, hit, avoid, crit, and attack speed stats. However, there is also a โcurseโ stat on the weapon screen, along with skills, Combat Arts, and Blaze Arts. These menu items in combat are present across the different characters shown in the trailer, so it’s likely they will be mechanics that the new title will focus on. The character Theodora had a โGambitโ option in combat, along with Blaze and Combat Arts, while Dietrichโs brief appearance also showed a Combat Arts option.
Unfortunately, the Nintendo Direct held no news on the potential for a new Fire Emblem remake, but the announcement seemed to confirm earlier Fire Emblem leaks that predicted a new game would be coming to the Switch 2.
Iโm excited by the premise and what we have seen of the combat of Fire Emblem: Fortuneโs Weave so far. The graphics look slick, and the way the menu and movement appear make it already feel like a polished title. I’m curious to see how the story unfolds and whether they will split the game into different versions or routes, similar to some of the series’ past titles. I have always disliked being limited to only recruiting certain characters based on the route I select, and I hope this new game will give players greater freedom to create their own story instead of being stuck on a predetermined path.
