New Highest-Rated 2025 Game Is a Nintendo Switch Console Exclusive

There is a new highest-rated game of 2025, and it is a Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 console exclusive, which is to say it is not available on PS5 nor Xbox Series X, but it is available via PC. In the process, the game in question has dethroned Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and further knocked down games like Hollow Knight: Silksong, Blue Prince, Split Fiction, Donkey Kong Bananza, and Death Stranding 2, all of which are close to the throne, but not on it.

Of course, the year is not over, so the celebrations may be premature, but right now, developer Supergiant Games can celebrate, and nobody can blame them because Hades II is officially the highest-rated new game of 2025, at least according to Metacritic. In our official review of the game, we awarded it a perfect 5/5, and apparently, many others gave it a high review score as well because it has a 94 on Metacritic, the only new release of 2025 to have a 94. And with this 94, it is actually one point higher than its equally critically acclaimed predecessor.

About the Game:

A roguelike action RPG, Hades II is the sequel to 2020’s Hades. This week, it was fully released, but it has been available via Steam Early Access since 2024. That said, while it has been on PC for a year, this week was the first time it was playable on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.

In the game, you play as Melinoe, Princess of the Underworld and the sister of Zagreus, who is the protagonist of the first game. With the assistance of other Olympian Gods, Melinoe is on a mission to take down Chronos, the Titan of Time.

What’s Left in 2025 That Could Dethrone It?

It is possible that as more reviews come in, Hades II’s score will lower. It is also possible it will increase, though this is less common. Typically, games drop over time. That said, if it doesn’t drop too much and retains the number one spot, it will have a very good chance of holding it. Other than Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, which arrives this December, it’s hard to imagine any game releasing between now and the end of the year that will dislodge it. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, though, if it’s as good as previous Metroid Prime games, may steal the crown at the buzzer. Whatever happens, Hades II will certainly be a favorite for Game of the Year come awards season.
