NieR: Automata has become one of the year’s biggest surprises, a game that is based upon a franchise that hasn’t seen a new addition in years, but has earned acclaim from fans and critics alike (including us). With that, the game has surprised Square Enix the most of all, especially when it comes to its long-term performance.

The publisher has announced today that the game, put together by the legendary Yoko Taro and the team at Platinum Games, has managed to reach two million copies shipped worldwide, across both retail shipments and digital downloads. Considering the game launched with very little fanfare, that’s an amazing feat.

To commemorate the occasion, the publisher has released a few image of the NieR: Automata world, which you can see below. It features the lead characters standing about on a war-torn battlefield, with a number of robots lurking behind them. It makes for some pretty amazing wallpaper for your mobile device, so feel free to use to your heart’s content!

The follow-up to the original NieR has been turning a lot of head since its release, showcasing some wonderfully rendered graphics and fun gameplay with a huge open world to explore, as well as some great power-ups that you can earn along the way.

There’s been a lot of talk about a possible sequel to the game, which Square Enix apparently seems to be gearing up for, but nothing has been made official as of yet. The publisher is taking its time with this one, letting the original release enjoy a great deal of success before Yoko and the Platinum team get back to work on a potential follow-up. And we’re fine waiting a bit, especially since Automata has a whole lot to explore โ€“ even after all these months.

Congrats to the team on a great level of success they’ve reached with NieR. Something tells us that this franchise won’t fade away so quickly this time around, especially with so many fans enjoying the new adventure. Long live 2B and company โ€“ and maybe a few of those robots.

NieR: Automata is available now for PlayStation 4 and PC.
