Nintendo Switch 2 Gets First New Firmware Update of 2026, Here’s What Changed

The first new firmware update for Nintendo Switch 2 consoles in 2026 has today been released around the globe. Since the arrival of the Switch 2 in the middle of last year, Nintendo has continued to release new patches for the console at a steady rate. Some of these updates for the platform have done quite a bit, while others have been much less notable. As for today’s new Switch 2 update, it happens to fit in this latter category, which means that users won’t find many major alterations to the hardware.

Downloadable now, update 21.2.0 for Nintendo Switch 2 only does one thing in particular. Like plenty of console updates we’ve seen in the past, this patch simply looks to improve the stability and overall experience that users will find on the platform. These types of updates have already been released countless times on Switch 2, and have also been seen on previous Nintendo platforms like the Switch and Wii U. As such, this is certainly not the last patch in this vein that we’ll be getting in the Switch 2’s life cycle.

Moving forward in 2026, we’ll undoubtedly start to get more important updates for the Switch 2. Nintendo fans have been requesting a variety of improvements to the console since it dropped, specifically when it comes to its UI. It’s not known if Nintendo will look to deliver on any of these requested upgrades, but the manufacturer has surely seen what users have been saying and may look to take this feedback into consideration.

On the software side of things, 2026 is shaping up to be a huge year for Switch 2 owners. In the next few months alone, Nintendo will be releasing Mario Tennis Fever, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, and Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream. Later in the year, other games like Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, Splatoon Raiders, The Duskbloods, and Rhythm Heaven Groove are known to be coming as well. And with another Nintendo Direct surely on the horizon for next month, we should get some other major Switch 2 announcements soon enough.
