Don’t Use Blissey and Chansey in Pokemon Go Raids

Blissey is once again causing trouble for Pokemon Go players, this time because of their over usage in Legendary Raids. While Blissey and Chansey are able to survive multiple attacks from Legendary Pokemon, they have a terrible Attack stat…which means that they largely turn into a burden for other members of Raid Groups.

For whatever reason, Pokemon Go auto-selects Chansey, Blissey, and other bulky Pokemon with low Attack stats when players first enter raids. While the majority of players choose a better Pokemon for their Raid Teams, at least a few (mainly lower level) participants stick with the game’s selections, mistakenly thinking that outlasting a Legendary Pokemon is a viable strategy.

Raids are ultimately determined by a group’s overall “damage per second (DPS)” or basically how much damage a group can dish out as quickly as possible. Most raid groups start off with a high DPS as they send out their best Pokemon out first, but that DPS starts to dip as weaker Pokemon enter the fray.

Blissey and Chansey both have terrible Attack stats. Pokemon like Dunsparce, Oddish, and Geodude all have better Attack stats than Blissey, while Weedle, Togepi, and Hoppip all have higher Attack stats than Chansey. Basically, using a Chansey during a Legendary Raid is like having a Weedle in battle for 30 seconds or longer. A Blissey or Chansey only hurts a team’s DPS, especially as it’s taking up a slot that could be filled by any of 150+ Pokemon with higher attack stats.

We might have also had something to do with the recentย uptickย inย Chanseyย andย Blisseyย in battle. Earlier this week, we pointed out that a player loses a Damage bonus when all their Pokemon faint ย during a raid, which means less Premier Balls with which to catch anย Articunoย or aย Lugia. We suggested that, if a player wanted to retain that bonus, it might be useful to hold your last Raid slot for a Pokemon likeย Blisseyย andย Chansey.ย

While this isn’t an invalid strategy, it only works in large raid groups where there’s no chance of failure. A large Raid Groupย won’t be affected by having aย Chanseyย or two on the battlefield, but a team of 10 isn’t going to bring down aย Lugiaย unless players aren’t wasting spots on weaker Pokemon.ย

We should also point out that have 6 Premier Balls to catch a Lugiaย is better than having 0 balls…which is precisely how many you’ll have if you can’t beat Lugiaย in the first place.ย

Blisseyย and Chanseyย should never be first options for Raid Battles in Pokemon Go. They should barely be considered as a last option, and only when your part of a large team. So, before you bring a barely useful Pokemon into battle…consider using one of the 150+ Pokemon with stronger attacks.ย
