Pokemon Go players are feeling their way through the new Legendary Raids and discovering just how difficult they are to beat. One of the problems, especially for players trying to beat raids with smaller group of trainers, is how quickly players seem to shuffle through Pokemon. Even normally bulky Pokemon won’t last very long in a raid if they get hit by a charge attack, so many players will find themselves out of Pokemon before the Legendary Raid is complete.

Once a player loses all six of its first Pokemon in a battle, they can re-enter the raid with a second team of attackers. Unfortunately, Pokemon Go will auto-select a players team, often with Pokemon that don’t make sense in battle. For instance, if you’re trying to battle a Articuno, the last thing you want is a weak Chansey or Kabutops instead of one of your stronger Arcanine or Flareon.
But here’s the thing: selecting Pokemon takes time, and those are valuable seconds that could make the difference between victory and defeat (or between earning a Damage Bonus and missing out on those extra Premier Balls.) So players are left with a choice, do they use the subpar team of attackers picked out by Pokemon Go, or do they waste 20-30 seconds trying to find the secondary attackers they need to win the raid?

While you can’t pre-set battle teams, there is a very easy way to quickly access the Pokemon you want to use in a raid battle. If you add a symbol in front of a Pokemon’s name, it will automatically appear first when you sort Pokemon by alphabetical order. It’ll still take you a few seconds to grab the Pokemon you need, but it’s a lot quicker than searching for specific Pokemon for every slot.
We recommend you use a different symbol for each Legendary Pokemon. Since Lugia has an attack that’s super effective against Rock/Ground types like Golem, it doesn’t do you any good to have it sorted next to Pokemon like Jolteon or Magneton. Use an exclamation point for Pokemon you want to bring to battle Articuno, and an asterisk for those you want for Lugia.
The other key is that you probably won’t need a full second team of Pokemon when you re-enter a raid. If your group is large enough, you should be able to get away with picking three or four Pokemon and then charging into battle.ย
There’s rumors that Pokemon Go is working on pre-set battle teams, but this trick should help a lot of players out in the meantime. This should save players valuable seconds and slots that could go into beating that Lugia or Articuno once and for all.
