Moltres is the team mascot of Pokemon Go‘s Team Valor and one of Kanto’s three Legendary Birds. Like Zapdos and Articuno, Moltres first appeared in Pokemon Red and Blue as one of those games’ main Legendary Pokemon. Since then, Moltres and the other Legendary birds have made periodic appearances as a “post-game” Legendary Pokemon, but haven’t played a central role in any Pokemon storyline. Most recently, Moltres appeared in Pokemon X & Y as a roaming Legendary Pokemon…provided that players picked Froakie as their starter Pokemon.

So what does Moltres look like in Pokemon Go and will it be a harder Raid Boss than Articuno? Keep on scrolling for full details about Moltres in Pokemon Go:

First Look at Moltres

moltres 2

Without further ado, here’s your first look at Moltres. As you can see, Moltres has a higher CP stat than Articuno, with a CP of 41953. That’s because Moltres has a lot higher Attack stat than Articuno, which also means that it could be a bit hotter to handle (excuse the pun) during Raid Battles.

Moltres comes with all Fire-Type attacks, including the extra-powerful Overheat. All of Moltres’s charge moves are decent, but aim for one that comes with Fire Blast or Overheat if you want to use it in battle.

As of the time of publication, we’ve only heard about one Moltres raid. The first Moltres popped up in a suburb of Seattle, even while other Articuno raids continued to pop up in the rest of the United States. We’ll see when a full transition takes place, but for now it looks like both Articuno and Moltres are co-existing in the game.

Tips and Tricks

Using Rock-Type attacks will be the key to beating Moltres. Moltres has a double weakness to Rock-Type attacks and a lower Defense stat than Articuno. Even better, Pokemon like Golem and Rhydon have a key resistance to Moltres’s Fire-Type attacks, so they won’t get wiped out on the first Charge attack they encounter.

Omastar, Kabutops, and Kingdra are also useful in Moltres raids as they all have double resistances to Moltres’s attacks. You can also use high powered Water-Type Pokemon like Vaporeon to round out your raid team in battle.

Because of Moltres’s multiple weaknesses, we’re guessing that Raid teams of 5 or more experienced players should be able to beat Moltres in a raid. We’ll have more on Moltres as players start feeling out this powerful Fire-Type Pokemon in battle later this week.
