2024 was a phenomenal year for the PS5 and for PS5-exclusive games. To this end, a PS5 exclusive, Astro Bot, won Game of the Year at The Game Awards, and it won our own GOTY at our own end-of-the-year awards. There was more than just Astro Bot, though. There was also Helldivers 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Stellar Blade, Silent Hill 2 Remake, Rise of the Ronin, and a couple of remasters in the form of The Last of Us Part II Remastered and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered. Again, it was a good year for the PS5. In fact, it was a landmark year for the console, and regarding exclusives, its best year yet.

A game that some forget because it was released right at the end of the year is Infinity Nikki. In the hardcore enthusiast space, it’s not often brought up because it’s not that type of game. It’s a free-to-play, more casual game meant to appeal to a wider audience. And it did appeal to a wider audience, as evidenced by it being downloaded by 20 million players in its release month. Other than perhaps Helldivers 2, it was the most-played PS5 game of 2024. Unfortunately, for developer Papergames, its player count has declined substantially, but for those still playing, it just got a new update that has made it better.
Major Upgrade
Following a recent update, Infinity Nikki on PS5 now runs at 60 FPS rather than 30 FPS. In fact, it defaults to 60 FPS, a great update for most players, but not all players. Some Infinity Nikki players are reporting having to turn the game back to 30 FPS — which is an option — as 60 FPS is giving them motion sickness. This is apparently especially an issue in the menus, but again, only for a minority of players. Of course, this is only an issue because it is not a locked 60 FPS, or if it is, it’s not working right. To this end, there appears to be a frame pacing issue. There have also been a couple of reports of the game now crashing during cutscenes, where it previously did not, but there’s no reason to think this is because of the frame rate bump. Rather, what is more likely is that this is an issue caused by some other part of the update.
Infinity Nikki is a casual action-adventure game with life-sim elements, which is to say, it is not a high-octane shooter or a lightning-fast action game. As a result, frame rate is not as important as it is to other games, but a smoother experience is a smoother experience, and it’s immediately noticeable.
