New PS5 Exclusive Announced Brings Back Series PlayStation Fans Haven’t Seen Since the PS2

A new PS5 console exclusive has been announced that will bring PlayStation fans back to a series they have not seen since the PS2 or, more specifically, since 2003. That said, the series itself dates back to the 90s and Sega consoles. Unfortunately, there is no word of a release date for PS5 fans, nor any word of PS5 Pro support. There is a trailer for the upcoming PS5 game, though, which can be seen below.

The upcoming PS5 console exclusive is Tokyo Xtreme Racer from Genki. As you may know, there has not been a Tokyo Xtreme Racer game on a PlayStation console since Tokyo Xtreme Racer 3 was released on PS2 in 2003. So this moment has been a long time coming for PlayStation fans, many of whom had given up on seeing the series again.

About the Game + Trailer

Tokyo Xtreme Racer has been available via Steam since this January, but this has been in early access form, though it did just fully release on PC this week. Right now, though, the only additional platform announced is PS5.

While it has mostly only been in early access, Steam users have been loving the throwback racer. To date, it has 8,239 user reviews. 96% of these reviews are positive, giving the game an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating. This is the highest rating a Steam game can earn.

Like Tokyo Xtreme Racer games of yesteryear, this is a mix between racing sim and arcade racer set in a sealed-off futuristic Tokyo. In the game, you customize cars and compete for the fastest speeds.

Price and PS5 Pro Support

Tokyo Xtreme Racer doesn’t have pricing information on the PlayStation Store, but the game currently costs $49.99 on Steam. So this will presumably be the price point on PS5 as well. As for PS5 Pro support, there isn’t word of any. With the number of games not supporting the latter, Pro owners probably shouldn’t hold their breath. That said, whether it comes with PS5 Pro support or not, the nostalgia alone is going to be enough to lure many in.

Considering 2025 is almost over, this will presumably be a PS5 console exclusive for 2026, joining the likes of Marvel’s Wolverine and Saros. Further, if a 2025 release date was in the cards, surely it would have been shared alongside this announcement.

All of that said, and as always, feel free to leave a comment letting us know what you think, or join the conversation over on the ComicBook Forum. Will you be checking out this nostalgic release when it hits PS5?
