Silksong Release Crashes Steam, Nintendo eShop & More

Hollow Knight: Silksong is finally here… but good luck playing it because all of the video game stores are down. Silksong is one of the most anticipated games of the decade, despite not being part of a major franchise like Grand Theft Auto. The original Hollow Knight was a smash hit and a total indie darling, prompting developer Team Cherry to work on an expansion that would eventually turn into a full blown sequel known as Silksong. It has been in the works for the better part of a decade and has come and gone from the public eye over the years, but fans have remained hungry for its release.

Just a few weeks ago, it was finally confirmed that Silksong would release in September. The day has finally arrived and… everything is crashing. The PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, Steam Store, and Nintendo eShop are all experiencing issues that prevent players from not only downloading Silksong, but other games as well. Players on Steam have been reporting the same error code of E502 L3, which indicates a server overload on Steam’s side. If you’re having issues, things will likely be fixed somewhat soon, but you’ll have to keep checking back throughout the day.

A big reason for Silksong‘s release crashing stores is because you couldn’t buy the game ahead of its release. I’ve personally never seen this happen for any other video game release and that’s because the various platforms always let you pre-order and subsequently pre-load the game before it actually comes out. It allows you to be ready the second the game is available, but that’s now how Team Cherry wanted this release to go. Hollow Knight: Silksong didn’t allow anyone to pre-order the game, so anyone who wanted to play it had to go buy it when it was officially released.

Silksong is also an Xbox Game Pass game, so there’s likely even more demand for it on Xbox. Giving out one of the most anticipated games at no extra cost is almost certainly going to drive a ton of people to the store to try and snag it. Regardless, we are likely going to be looking at some massive player counts and sales numbers when all is said and done. Unfortunately, there are no early reviews for Silksong, so it will be a bit before we know if the game managed to truly stick the landing.

Silksong is officially out now on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch 1 and 2, and PC.
