Sonic Mania is finally here, and the game seems to be refreshingly free of the performance issues that plague so many games at launch these days. That may seem like a gimme, since Sonic Mania is a simple 2D sprite-based game, but nothing’s guaranteed these days. Heck, even the Nintendo Switch version runs smoothly at 1080p!

Ah, but no launch can be 100 percent perfect. According to Kotaku and a number of other players, Sonic Mania is causing some strange hardware hiccups on the Nintendo Switch. Apparently, the Switch’s capture, home, and power buttons are slow to respond, or don’t work at all, when playing Sonic Mania. This is particularly true when the system is in handheld mode.

Now, this issue doesn’t effect core gameplay, but it certainly has the potential to be annoying. If you’re playing Sonic Mania on the go and the home and power buttons stop working, you’re pretty much stuck โ€“ aside from letting the battery run down, there’s no way to quit the game. Kotaku has asked Sega about the issue, but they’ve yet to provide a response.

For whatever reason, Switch ports seem to be somewhat challenging, even for games that aren’t very technically demanding. Games like NBA Playgrounds and Overcooked have launched with a variety of performance issues and other problems even though the Switch should easily be able to handle them.

Despite the few minor snafus on Switch, Sonic Mania is a true return to form, which is picking up the hedgehog’s best reviews in 15 years. You can check out WWG’s full review of the game, right here.

Sonic Mania is currently available on Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch.
