We have our first look at Star Wars Battlefront II gameplay, which is good news, but the clip is not quite as epic as we hoped it would be. Someone, somewhere, was able to procure some footage from what is obviously an early test-build of the game and was brave enough to upload a couple seconds of video. You can find the short clip right here:

Here we see our Imperial protagonist on board some kind of ship, and she doesn’t seem too happy. We assume this is our protagonist, by the way, because of the black armor and helmet — the same helmet that we see her remove in the official trailer. We assume she isn’t happy because, well, she ends up clocking a rebel soldier in the face and taking him down.
This does raise some questions about possible story events in Battlefront II. From everything we’ve heard so far, our protagonist is loyal to the Empire. The team at LucasArts and DICE wanted to tell a story in this universe from the point of view of an Imperial soldier, offering players a unique perspective during the years bridging the events of Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. Perhaps she is fighting off an invading force of Rebel soldiers in their attempt to take over the Tantive IV?
It’s hard to tell from this short clip, and the clip itself is full of janky animations and oddities. We think it’s safe to assume that this is from a very early build of the game for multiple reasons. The physical “takedown” we see is hardly physical at all. We see the Rebel soldier bites the dust while the protagonist just swings widly into the open air — this is likely a placeholder action until the takedown animations are worked into the game. The droid on the right hand side, which is apparently working on picking a lock, seems to glitch in and out of place as well.
And what’s up with the Rebel soldiers on the opposite side of the door? They just stand there shooting at the door itself. When it opens and they actually get a clear shot at our protagonist, they turn around and run away. That’s some goofy AI.
We’ll get our first official gameplay reveal on June 10, and I think that will be much more exciting than what we saw here today, so stay tuned for that. In the meantime, do check out some screenshots in the gallery below.
