Tekken’s narrative road has been long and winding, and it may be reaching it’s most significant intersection next week when Tekken 7 launches. Bandai Namco has released the opening cinematic, and it sure looks like the feud between Heihachi and Kazuya is coming to an end one way or another. This is a family feud which has spiraled out of control. “The feud of the Mishima family and its footprint on the rest of the world. From honor, duty, vengeance, all their fights are personal. In a final showdown filled by blood and anger, what began in death will endโฆin death.” What started off as a seemingly singular act of child murder has swelled into global battle for dominance and, ultimately, you’re going to decide how it ends.
We’re incredibly interested to see how Akuma fits into the narrative as well. In the past Akuma has been summoned as a kind of demonic agent to serve justice to those who have perturbed the universal balance in some way, either out of greed or anger. His an insatiable, blood-thirsty champion who knows no equal; what if he ends up bringin Heihachi down instead of Kazuya? Could that set the stage for Tekken 8 down the line? Akuma would be a hell of a villain, but that’d be a huge canonical shakeup for fans who have been following Tekken since the very beginning. We’ll have to wait and see.
