This summer's re-imagining of The Mummy, featuring Tom Cruise, didn't exactly do Universal Pictures any favors. Despite the fact that the movie made decent box office overseas, it bombed here in the U.S., and left a lot of fans and critics less than thrilled with the studio's forthcoming Dark Universe.

But there is some good that came out of it – the team at WayForward working on a new retro-style shooter based on the franchise. The Mummy Demastered was announced earlier this year, but we've heard very little about it since. However, it appears that the studio is just about ready to unleash it upon the world.

WayForward noted that the game was "coming soon", and released a new trailer to give players an idea of what to expect from it. It appears to be a mixture of Contra and Castlevania elements, as a soldier brought back from the dead ventures forth to take on the dreaded Mummy and her evil allies, including a whole bunch of bats and other monsters. You'll want to lock and load for this one, it seems.

The studio provided some new details on the game, which can be found below:

A powerful ancient evil has arisen, and the war to save humanity has begun! The Mummy Demastered throws you into a 16-bit-inspired battle against the undead in a 2D, nonlinear, action-packed adventure. As an elite agent in the monster-hunting Prodigium organization, you must use a variety of weapons, upgrades, and mysterious artifacts to defend mankind against the supernatural hordes of Princess Ahmanet. Your Prodigium unit is already on the scene, but HQ lost contact with them hours ago. Only by exploring tombs, forests, abandoned tunnels, and the cursed streets of London will you discover the fate of your allies. But beware – Ahmanet commands legions of undead, insects, plague-ridden vermin, and worse! If you're not careful, you'll be the next soul in her army.

– Stunning retro-inspired graphics and atmospheric chiptune soundtrack
– Shoot-'em-up action meets exploration-based adventuring
– Fight for survival against swarms of horrifying enemies and bosses
– Obliterate monsters with an arsenal of weapons including grenades, a flamethrower and more
– Uncover and collect 50 hidden relics

There's still no word on a release date, but October would be an ideal month for The Mummy Demastered, which is set to release for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
