Earlier this week, news broke that 20th Century Fox was moving ahead with a slew of upcoming superhero features. Not only did Deadpool 2 nab an official release date, but the company also announced premieres for X-Men: Dark Phoenix and X-Men: New Mutants. The latter two projects will explore more of the younger X-Men and their tales moving forward. And, now, the very appropriate working title for New Mutants has been revealed.
According to Production Weekly, New Mutants is operating under the working title ‘Growing Pains.’ Clearly, the name suits the film as New Mutants will follow a slew of newcomer mutants who attend classes as Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. The spinoff series has traditionally focused on characters like Cannonball, Sunspot, Wolfsbane, and Magik. According to current reports, it sounds like the mutants will face off against their first villain thanks to Demon Bear. The antagonist is a class one from the New Mutants series, so fans will be pleased to see the figure come to life in live-action.

Since the film will be focused on a group of teenaged mutants, the term ‘Growing Pains’ is apt for the hormonal group. The tone of the New Mutants series has always leaned to a more young-adult audience, and 20th Century Fox will surely want to capitalize on that evergreen market. The film is expected to begin filming next month with production taking place in Boston and Montreal.
Of 20th Century Fox’s upcoming movies, New Mutants is set to debut first. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on April 13, 2018 while Deadpool 2 bum-rushes theaters on June 1, 2018. X-Men: Dark Phoenix will then hit cinemas on November 2, 2018.
At this moment, no official word has been given on the film’s casting, but rumors have surfaced about a few possible attachments. Several reports have suggested that Maisie Williams is being eyed for Wolfsbane while Nat Wolff may play Canonball. Others have speculated that James McAvoy will reprise his role as Professor Xavier for the flick. Alexandra Shipp may also do the same for her role as Storm.
