One of the Marvel characters to be introduced into the next MCU film has a longstanding history in the comics that came into recognition in the fan-favorite storyline Planet Hulk. As part of the Incredible Hulk’s Warbound, Korg helped liberate the planet Sakaar and then journeyed with the Jade Giant back to Earth in a quest for vengeance when their new home was destroyed.

The rock-based lifeform will make its Marvel Studios debut in Thor: Ragnarok, a film partially based on the Planet Hulk storyline, in a motion-capture performance by the movie’s director Taika Waititi.

We caught up with Waititi at San Diego Comic-Con and spoke to him about the character and how Korg’s role had grown over the course of development.

“Thor meets him on Sakaar and he’s one of the gladiators. He becomes Thor’s mate,” Waititi said. “Originally it only started off as a very small role โ€” hey, it wasn’t me, I didn’t do it โ€” but the role’s gotten bigger now.”

Waititi later joked that he “fell in love with the actor.”

The director is also doing the mo-cap for Surtur in the film, however that character’s voice will be provided by Clancy Brown.

We’ll see how it all turns out when Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters on November 3.
