The relationship between Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons, aka FitzSimmons, has easily been the one with the most fan investment since Agents of SHIELD first premiered, despite the “Philinda” pairing of Melinda May and Phil Coulson gaining a lot of steam in Season 4.

FitzSimmons went through a long “will they, won’t they” phase through Agents of SHIELD‘s first two seasons. Then, in Agents of SHIELD Season 3, the FitzSimmons relationship literally spanned the stars.
But Agents of SHIELD Season 4 has been a different kind of challenge for FitzSimmons. The new policies of new SHIELD director Jeffrey Mace and Dr. Holden Radcliffe’s secret LMD experiments with AIDA have meant that Fitz and Simmons are forced to keep a lot of secrets from each other.
Now that AIDA has been revealed to the director, and Mace seems to have a better understanding of Coulson’s team’s relationships, what’s next for FitzSimmons?
“They’re suffering a little bit from working with the person you’re with,” executive producer Jed Whedon tells EW. “We want to make sure that we get to see them just be together and be FitzSimmons of old. That doesn’t mean there aren’t still bumps in the road ahead, but there’s a reason these two are together, and a reason the audience is rooting for them. So they’ll get over their bumps in the road and we’ll spend some time with them just being a couple and enjoy working together.”
Sounds like things may be returning to normal for FitzSimmons, or at least as normal as it gets for a couple of SHIELD agents.
Things will be quite different for the SHIELD team when Agents of SHIELD returns in January with a new subtitle, “LMD.” The second half of Agents of SHIELD Season 4 sees Agent Melinda May replaced by a life model decoy of AIDA’s creation.
