Professor X's Wheelchair Appears On Legion

Tonight's episode of Legion just offered X-Men fans what is, at the very least, a huge Easter egg and could be more of a genuine hint of things to come.

Earlier in the first season of Legion, it was revealed to David Haller that he was adopted. It was also made clear that The Shadow King – the parasitic, psychic mutant who has latched itself to David's psyche – has a history with David's biological father. The Shadow King described David's father as a kind of self-righteous hypocrite, a common insult levied at Professor X – David's father in the Marvel Comics universe and the father founder of the X-Men - for holding lofty ideals he sometimes does not manage to measure up to.

Tonight's episode, "Chapter 7," made it clear that the Shadow King still has business with David's father. Early in the episode, the Shadow King interrogates David's sister, Amy Haller, for information about the man who brought David to her home when he was a child. Amy doesn't remember much, but it is enough for the Shadow King to recognize that this is the same man he remembers from before, David's biological father.

When this realization hits the Shadow King, there's a brief glimpse into what seems to be the evil mutant's own memories of Davids father. The vision is split between the Shadow King's "devil with yellow eyes" appearance and a wheelchair with a very distinctive "X" on the wheel.

X-Men fans will recognize this wheelchair as a version of the one used by Professor X in both the Marvel Comics universe and several X-Men movies ever since he lost the use of his legs. See the image yourself below.

In the lead-up to Legion's premiere, it was unclear just how much the series would reference its X-Men comic book or movie roots. If you were watching some of the early episodes without any context you wouldn't know that it was an X-Men or Marvel show at all except for the occasional use of the word "mutant." When Legion seemed to indicate that David's father was an astronomer rather than a psychic mutant, some felt it was safe to assume the series going to avoid bringing up the character's distinguished lineage.

However, the reveal that David was adopted, the Shadow King's references to David's biological father, and now this wheelchair seem to point directly at Professor X being David's biological father, even if the series hasn't uttered Xavier's name yet.

How far will Legion take it? Will Professor X actually appear on Legion? Fans will have to wait and see.

Legion airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. on FX. Next week, FX will air the first season finale. Legion has already been renewed for a second season in 2018.
