Spider-Man: Homecoming Ferry Scene Was Mostly Practical Effects

One of the big set piece scenes in Spider-Man: Homecoming is the Staten Island Ferry scene, but you might be surprised at how "real" the whole thing is.

As seen in the trailers, Spider-Man is shown attempting to keep the Ferry from splitting directly in half. Director Jon Watts was asked how they put the impressive scene on the screen, and it wasn't as CG as you might think.

"We used a combination of a big set in Atlanta we built that could rip in half," said Watts. "The actual ferry in New York City. They were amazingly gracious to let us shoot on the proper ferry, and to put that all together, I feel bad that we did so much damage to it."

It helps the scene retain some believability, giving everything a real feeling of weight. That's the advantage that practical effects will always have on CGI, despite the insane advances visual effects have made.

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.

The cast includes Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Zendaya, Donald Glover, JacobBatalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Tyne Daly, Bokeem Woodbine, with Marisa Tomei, and Robert Downey Jr. It also includes Jon Favreau, Martin Starr, Kenneth Choi, Michael Mando, Selenis Leyva, Isabella Amara, Jorge Lendeborg, Jr., JJ Totah, and Hannibal Buress.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is in theaters now. Spider-Man: Homecoming lands on July 7, 2017, followed by Thor: Ragnarok on November 3, 2017. After that Black Panther debuts on February 16, 2018, while Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 4, 2018. Ant-Man and the Wasp is slated for July 6, 2018, followed by Captain Marvel on March 8, 2019.
